Hitting the wrong chord
The immigrant community's campaign against congressional moves to punish illegal immigrants as criminals and their insistence that they deserve equality, fairness and civil rights has turned off many Americans. What part of "illegal'' don't these immigrants understand, they ask. Play by the rules, they add. The protests with immigrants wrapped in Mexican flags provided visuals to spark the opposition. The work boycott planned Monday to demonstrate how important immigrants are to the U.S. economy will no doubt aggravate the situation. But that's nothing compared to the reaction they'll get to the release of a Spanish version of "The Star-Spangled Banner.''
The producer of the recording sees it as an ode to the millions of immigrants seeking a better life here. But the foreign language version will just remind so many Americans of their many contacts with "Press 1 for English, Press 2 for Spanish.'' Plus, there's something sacred about our National Anthem. It's written in English and should be sung in English. And when the remix of the song comes out with several lines in English that condemn U.S. immigration policy, the furor will boil over.
Yes, they're all very constitutional exercises of the freedoms of speech and assembly. But members of the immigrant community don't seem to understand how this in-your-face approach is hardening the opposition. It's probably too late to call off the work stoppage. But messing with the National Anthem should be stopped in its tracks.

You mentioned freedom of speech and constitutional rights in your blog, but they are not citizens so I did not think they had the same rights as citizens.
That is not really what I wanted to comment on tho.....I want someone to explain to me why we have to have big signs in spanish in our library telling us where to check books in and out, but all or most all of the books in the library are in english so why are the signs necessary? If they don't understand english, there would be no reason for them to be in the library checking out books.
It seems to me that if the limits on how many people allowed to immigrate were lifted then the need to stand in line and wait would eliminate one incentive to illegally enter this country.
The Star Spangled Banner has a number of problems: (a)the melody was written by an Englishman, (b) the melody was a London drinking song, (c) the words, while inspiring, sing of the glory of war, whereas we do have other things to be proud of in America, (d) from a singer's perspective, it has a ghastly range of notes. We definitely don't need a Spanish anthem (or a Spanish anything) but we sure could use an anthem that's written entirely by an American, and which sings the praises of our country, not just of its warships.
I never paid much attention to the illegals until they started taking over Middle class jobs changing our national athem demanding they work and not pay taxes demand health care for free when 45 million Americans have no such thing. They decide to have a protest on a communist Day which is may 1. Many of us remember hiding under our desk as children just in case the bomb came. What is next make them legal and maybe they will want Castro to be our president. Give me a break.
ALOT OF THE IMMIGRANTS IN THIS COUNTRY DO NOT FILE OR PAY ANY TAXES ON THEIR EARNINGS AND THE GOVT. SHOULD WORRY ABOUT THIS MORE THAN RAISING THE FUEL PRICES WITH SO MUCH IN RESERVE. ALSO IN RESPONSE TO THE MOSSAOUI VERDICT. WHEN WILL THIS COUNTRY THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE SO GREAT TO BE A PART OF LEARN NOT TO REWARD ALL THESE SADISTIC KILLERS AND CRIMINALS WITH KEEPING THEIR OWN LIVES. YES THERE ARE SICK PEOPLE BUT WE NEED TO LEARN TO PUNISH THE OBVIOUS GUILTY. WE WILL PAY ACCORDING TO NEWS ABOUT 4 MILLION DOLLARS TO KEEP THIS FREAK ALIVE. WORRY ABOUT EMINENT DOMAIN INSTEAD AND WHO IS MAKING THE MONEY NOT THE HARSH REALITY OF LIFE.
